The sash is the badge of the Metis People,
both in the U.S. and in Canada. It is the
most important part of your regalia.
It was worn by Eastern Woodland People
as a sign of office in the 19th century, and
it was worn by French Canadians during the
Lower Canadian Rebellion in the 1830's. It
is still considered to be an important part
of traditional dress.
The sash has acquired new significance
in the 20th century, now symbolizing pride
and identification for Metis people in the
US and Canada.
